Is your brand forgettable?

People meet you at an event. They like you. They take your card. A week later they couldn't pick your business out of a lineup.

It's not because your work isn't good. It's because nothing about how you show up is doing the remembering for you.

Memory needs a hook

People don't remember businesses. They remember one thing about a business. A colour. A line. A logo that made them look twice. A way of talking that didn't sound like everyone else.

If your brand doesn't hand people that one thing, their brain files you under "seemed nice" and moves on. And "seemed nice" never wins work six months later when the need finally shows up.

The generic tax

Most forgettable brands aren't bad. They're safe. Safe colours, safe words, a safe logo that could belong to any of a dozen competitors. Safe feels sensible when you're choosing it. In the market, safe is invisible.

Here's the uncomfortable part: the businesses winning work you should be winning often aren't better. They're just easier to remember when the moment comes.

What memorable actually takes

Not louder. Not weirder. Just distinct and consistent. One clear idea of who you are, expressed the same way every single time someone meets you. Same voice, same look, same feeling, until the repetition does what repetition does.

That takes a decision about what your one thing is. Most businesses have never made that decision, which is why most businesses are forgettable.
